O’Connell Out Of Irish Side.

20/06/02. Paul O’Connell has failed a fitness test and has been withdrawn from the Ireland side for the second Test at Eden Park. He will be replaced by Malcolm O’Kelly who wins his 40th cap.

O’Connell found it difficult to mask his disappointment but the shoulder injury he received at Carisbrook just didn’t respond to treatment in time.

Eddie O’Sullivan also finalised his replacement bench with Alan Quinlan returning at the expense of David Wallace. Wallace was called into the squad when Quinlan and Eric Miller were injured in the opening game in Timaru. There is also a place on the bench for 24 year old Leinster lock Leo Cullen.
