Things Far From All Black in Clfden

29/04/02. A 75th minute try from wing Alan Keogh, when his side were trailing by a single point, gave Connemara a 25-21 victory over gallant Dublin University in the AIB League Div 3 final.

The decisive score came at the end of a hugely entertaining final in front of couple of thousand supporters, the majority who travelled from the west. And it was a tribute to both sides that they opted to play open attractive rugby from the kick off.

Trinity scored after six minutes when Colm Curneen flicked a back pass to lock Alan Maher for the game’s opening try. From then on the lead changed hands several times before Keogh’s try sealed victory for the Blacks

Trinuty led 15-10 at half time, their second try coming on the stroke of half time from John Quigley which was converted by Daid Johnston. Moments before that score, Pat O’Toole had wriggled over for a try that his brother Henry converted.

Kevin Keogh – bother of Alan – tied the match with his side’s second try six minutes after the restart but Johnston’s penalty, nine minutes later had Trinity back in front (18-15).

Then, veteran full back O’Toole showed plenty of pace after taking a pass from Noel Whelan for a score that restored Connemara’s lead. Johnstone edged Trinity ahead but the Blacks had the final say with Keogh’s try sendind the trophy to Connacht.
