12/04/02.Leinster assistant Alan Gaffney has become the latest coach to be linked to the soon to be vacant position as Munster Director of Coaching.
Reports of Gaffney’s (55) interest surfaced yesterday in the media but, according to the official Leinster website, a move to the Heineken Cup semi-finalists is “purely speculative”.
A Leinster spokesman said, ” It is inevitable that a coach of Alan’s stature would be targeted by a number of clubs including Newport, Munster & other European sides. Alan has indicated that he wants to stay with Leinster beyond his contract, which expires at the end of this season.”
Nevertheless it is believed that Gaffney travelled south during the week to meet with Munster officials.
For their part Munster refuse to comment on the speculation. “We have steadfastly refused to discuss who has, or hasn’t applied for the position and that will remain the policy”. said team manager Jerry Holland.
