Bill McLaren Bows Out

The great voice of rugby, Bill McLaren delivered his last match commentary from Lansdowne Road last Saturday. It was here in 1953, that he began a career that made him a household name.

04/03/02.Legendary commentator Bill McLaren payed his last working visit to Lansdowne Road on Saturday. After 50 years in a role that has made him the Voice of Rugby, Bill has decided to retire.

He did his first commentary at Lansdowne Road in 1953 and to mark the occasion of his retirement, the President of the Irish Rugby Football Union, Mr. Roy Loughead joined with the Irish team members to make him a Waterford Crystal presentation when the BBC legend visited Lansdowne Road to watch Ireland in their final training session on the Friday prior to the game.
