Geordan Murphy opened the scoring with a try after six minutes which David Humphreys converted and the out-half added a penalties in the 13th and 20th minutes to extend Ireland’s lead to 13-0.

O’Connell scored his try in the 25th minute before departing injured to be replaced by Gary Longwell and Humphreys was on the mark again with penalties in the 35th and 42nd minutes.

Deep in injury time, Stephen Jones opened the Welsh account with a long range penalty.
