Romolo a Porta Settimiana
Via di Porta Settimiana 8
Head across the Tiber to Trastevere and this 400-year-old restaurant. This is a classic Roman restaurant in an ancient working-class quarter and reservations are recommended.
Via Monterone 85, 00186
This is a 16th century papal palace and everywhere you turn you are reminded of this venue's history. Thoughtfully non-smokers are seated upstairs - perhaps one reason why this restaurant, run by an order of lay missionaries, is so popular. It's closed on Sundays though.
Checchino Dal 1887
Via Monte Testaccio 30, 00153
A tratorria with a reputation, and not a vegetarian one! Traditional food - guts, brains, tripe and liver - is the speciality so head here if Italian meat is your thing.
