Venue History
There has been rugby played on the Twickenham site since 1909, when the RFU realised the positives of owning their own ground. Previously the ground had been a market garden and was used to grow cabbages, hence the nickname 'The Cabbage Patch'! The first game was between Harlequins and Richmond and the first international, between England and Wales, followed in 1910. At that time the capacity was 20,000 but over the intervening 100-or-so years the stadium has been completely redeveloped and can now seat 82,000. The latest stage in this, the new South Stand, was only finished in 2007.

Twickenham has hosted some of the biggest matches in rugby history including the 1991 World Cup final and three Heineken Cup finals. All of these saw English clubs succeed, apt for the self-proclaimed 'Home of English Rugby'.

Unimaginable only 20 years ago, Twickenham saw several high profile rugby league matches be played, including England v Australia in 2000 and two Challenge Cup finals, both won by St Helens. In recent years Twickenham has also hosted some of the biggest names in world music including U2, The Rolling Stones, Genesis and The Police.
