In 2005 Cardiff celebrated its city centenary and half-century as Wales's capital with a year-long programme of events and parties. Cardiff is home to the BBC's recent revival of the classic series Doctor Who.

In 2004 Cardiff became the world's first FairTrade capital city. Author Roald Dahl was born in Cardiff, as were sporting stars Colin Jackson and Ryan Giggs.

In 1910 Robert Falcon Scott left Cardiff for his ill-fated expedition to the South Pole. Memorials to the valiant captain are dotted across the city. The Arms Park witnessed one of rugby's greatest ever tries when Gareth Edwards scored for the Barbarians against the All Blacks in 1973.
