Schools Cup Rugby

The contribution that the schools have made to Irish Rugby, its development and progress, has been absolutley vital to the game in this country.

Successive generations of dedicated teachers, religious and lay, have sustained the game in the schools with a long and distinguished tradition.

More schools are playing the game than at any time.

The Schools Cup competitions, run under the auspices of the four Provincial Branches have long been part of the fabric of rugby life.

Indeed the first competitive rugby in Ireland was the Ulster School Senior Cup in 1876. Leinster inaugurated their Schools Cup in 1887, Munster followed in 1909 and Connacht in 1913.
