Ireland captain Brian O'Driscoll, who is in New Zealand preparing for the first match of the three Test series against the World champions which takes place this Saturday, was delighted with the news, evoking memories of his own experiences at underage level.
Speaking from Auckland, he said: "The news was the talk of the team room when we woke up early this morning to learn the final score.
"I am sure it was an incredibly partisan atmosphere playing in front of 10,000 screaming South African supporters, so to come away with a win over the hosts of the tournament is a great effort.
"While being mindful that the team have another big match against England later this week, it is still a superb win today and the whole of the senior squad would like to pass on their congratulations to Niall Scannell, Mike Ruddock and the rest of the squad and we wish them the best for their next game."
