The initiative is broken down into three sections Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3. Each level teaches proficiency in the basic skills of rugby, including various levels of difficulty in evasion, passing and tackling. Once each level is completed the participant will receive a special commissioned IRFU / Frosties badge. The initiative will be taught by the IRFU Youth Development team as part of its continued training scheme - the Frosties Rugby Youth Development Programme.
The development of a special booklet and an awards scheme to commend youth players who complete the series of skills has also been completed and will begin at training sessions throughout the country this season.
The new initiative is a further development of the Frosties Rugby Youth Development Programme, launched in 2001, which works to introduce the game of rugby to schoolchildren from the age group of under 8's to 15 years which has enjoyed huge success in the past year since its launch.
The programme is operated in partnership with the local Clubs and represents an ideal linkage in the recruitment of players to the club game.
Eddie Wigglesworth, the IRFU Director of Rugby Development says: "The Kellogg's Frosties YDO scheme continues to go from strength to strength. Thanks to the generous support of Kellogg's Frosties, this season there will be over 90 Youth Development Officers working across the 4 provinces of Ireland coaching up to 50,000 kids on the basics of the game of rugby."" It is a hugely influential and schematic programme, driving participation at club, youth and mini level, now widely recognised by all sporting bodies in Ireland as an essential template for active involvement of our youth in team sports."
John Rooney, Marketing Manager of Kellogg's Ireland, says:"Since the launch of the IRFU Frosties Rugby Programme, there has been a phenomenal response to its campaign of enrolling new youth players in the game of rugby. This new rugby skills programme brings the game back to its basics in order that young players can learn and appreciate every aspect of the game while learning the fundamentals that will help them in their quest to be great players. Brian O'Driscoll is a well respected and pivotal player in the Ireland squad - who better for children to learn their rugby skills from? We would like to take this opportunity to thank Brian for his enthusiastic support and co-operation throughout the development of this programme."
