The staff at the hospital will now begin the long process of correcting Murphy's injury.
Murphy will not figure in Eddie O'Sullivan's plans when he announces his world cup squad on Sunday Sept. 7th. Best case scenario will see Murphy back playing for the Six Nations in the New Year.
It is the second blow for Ireland after it was also confirmed that centre Rob Henderson has a ruptured bicep which he picked in the Munster v Leinster Celtic League opener on Friday night. Henderson will also miss the world cup but should return to action for the Heineken Cup with Munster.
