Tomas O'Leary will miss the remainder of Munster's Heineken Cup and Magners League campaigns and the Lions trip to South Africa after sustaining a fractured ankle in the opening stages of Friday's Magners League win over the Scarlets at Musgrave Park.
A statement issued by Munster Rugby on Saturday confirmed that O'Leary 'sustained a fractured ankle in the course of the Magners League game against the Scarlets at Musgrave Park.'
The Corkman, a key figure in Ireland's Grand Slam success this season, will have the injury assessed by a specialist today (Saturday).
Commenting on the loss of O'Leary, ahead of next Saturday's crunch Heineken Cup semi-final against Leinster, Munster coach Tony McGahan said: "It goes without saying that we are very disappointed to lose a player of Tomas' stature at this crucial stage of the season.
"Even more particularly so, from his own personal point of view, given that he had just been selected to tour with the Lions, and our thoughts are with him in that regard.
"However in immediate terms, in Tomas and Peter Stringer we are fortunate to have two of the best scrum halves in the country in our squad and the experience of Mike Prendergast to call on when required."
